about

Utilizing myriad percussive instruments to provide a melodic foundation to its post-punk edge, “Impatience/Watch Them Go” is the first 2022 release from Los Angeles-based art project Dark Parts, and finds the solo artist exploring a longer song format as well as collaboration with other musicians. Musically, the song was composed around two marimba tracks, bass and drums while guitar feedback (courtesy of Blank Squares guitarist Syam Zapalowski) and other percussion such as glockenspiel and vibraslap providing unique coloring to the frenetic (anxious?) energy of the track.
Lyrically, Dark Parts figurehead Brain Cosgrave illustrates the frustration of watching the world behave like a child by utilizing melody, spoken word as well gospel-influenced call-and-response. The lyrics are informed by his experiences as an emergency room worker who, after a year and a half of fighting the pandemic, returns to his familial home to find his mother radicalized by right-wing extremism and his father slipping into alcoholic dementia. The track is rounded out with background vocals by Bonnie Bloomgarden of Death Valley Girls and David Ramirez of Adult Parts.

lyrics

Impatience / Watch Them Go

Oh divine Brigid
For you I reach
All of my days

You stifle my hunger
You throw away my cage
A wounded image of succour
Isn’t who I am

We’re drowning in our own famine
Full of foolish boasts
And nightmarish sinister parents
Who berate us like we’ve torn our coats

Uh-oh
Impatience
Uh-oh
Impatience
I need patience
Cuz I’ve lost my patience with you all

Sometimes it’s hard
To quiet the voices in my head
And sometimes they become
So quiet that

I don’t think that I’m alive
I don’t think that
Living day to day
Is the answer to anything

Uh-oh
Impatience
Uh-oh
Impatience
I need some patience
Cuz I’ve lost my patience with you all

I want patience
I scream for patience
But I’ve lost my patience
I’ve lost my patience with you all
Outside the streets
Bleed bright below
The freaks that love
To peek above

The freeze that lies
Between the time
It takes between our breaths

While the shadow line
Is leaving little light
Upon myself

That’s right sun
You keep it to yourself
Whatever bursts your beams
You gotta keep

Keep it to yourself
You keep it to yourself
You keep it to yourself

Watch Them Go
Watch them strut
Stroll tumble and pour
Upon the city’s square
And chipped concrete

Watch them
Commit crimes tonight
Small ones sure
But other’s unspeakable
Filled with pus, lust and vitriol

Watch them
Relentlessly pursue
The gorging and gouging
Of everyone and everything

Watch them
Record it all
For popularity’s sake

Watch them
Escape from this
In the only way they know how

This tragically fickle
And lurid world
Repeatedly proving itself
Menacing trite uncaring and spoiled

Watch them go
And wave goodbye
And let the separation of our shadows
Not betray the warmth
We once felt for each other

Wave goodbye to their heads
As they head the wrong way
Wave goodbye to their arms
That though the same as ours
Reach for opposing things

We reach for sympathetic lovers
We reach for transformation
We reach for sublime patience
But how such silly limbs betray us

We reach for the present:
The placing of feet in miraculous soil
And dedication to every
Vibration crossing our ears

As if
One ever-changing
Awe-inspiring orchestra
Performed by eight and a half million
Species coexisting
Is always playing to entertain us
If we just listen

It is vastly more gorgeous
Than the incessant mind mice
Squeaking fragmented falsehoods
Pregnant with the anxiety and depression
That is ultimately steering
What was once a
Young
Brave
Shining Ship

Can you hear the rusty cogs screech
The same turning the hands
That encircle our necks
And slowly squeeze
Until once pursed lips part
And we kiss the sweet slumber
From which we’ll never awake
